California Music Project

The California Music Project is a new organization committed to improving music education in California public schools. As the Music For All Foundation reported in 2004, music education has suffered a decline more precipitous than that of any other subject taught in our schools today. This, in spite of the fact, that it has been statistically established that in the process of music education, the cognitive abilities of students, especially in the areas of mathematics and science, are substantially enhanced.

By releasing this CD, comprised of musical selections performed by some of California's most popular artists, we hope to focus the attention of the public and policy makers on this unprecedented decline. Our goal is to instill awareness on their part, so that with their help, our students can develop into the performers and audiences of the future.

By engaging in public/private partnerships, we anticipate forming collaborations. We will work tirelessly to strengthen music education in California’s public schools through statewide advocacy and the funding of effective programs and people.

Special thanks to Bruce Orr, the co-founder of the excellent Texas Music Project, upon which our California Music Project is modeled. He has guided us thoughtfully and successfully, recognizing the differences in our pursuits, while committed to helping CMP achieve its goals.

The clarity, commitment and dedication of our board has been outstanding. In particular, I am grateful to the many individuals whose contributions were essential in bringing our programs to life.

Thank you and let the music begin!
